Nikolai Semyonovich Samokish (1860–1944) was a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, educator, and Honored Artist of the RSFSR. He was one of the founders of Soviet battle painting. He graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts and was an Academy pensioner in France. He taught at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, the Higher Art School at the Academy of Arts, and the Kharkiv Art Institute. He was a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1941) for the painting 'The Red Army Crossing the Sivash'.
