Meissen is the oldest European porcelain manufactory, founded in 1710 in Saxony following the discovery of the secret of hard-paste porcelain production by J. F. Böttger and E. W. von Tschirnhaus. The manufactory's products were in high demand among the European and Russian aristocracy. Since 1722, the "crossed blue swords" have served as the trademark for its products. Masterpieces from the manufactory are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Hermitage.
