Samokish Nikolai Semyonovich

Nikolai Semyonovich Samokish (1860–1944) was a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and educator, and one of the founders of Soviet battle painting. He studied at the Academy of Arts under P. P. Chistyakov. He became an Academician in 1890 and a full member of the Academy of Arts in 1913. He taught at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, the Higher Art School at the Academy of Arts, and the Kharkiv Art Institute. He was a laureate of the USSR State Prize (1941) for his painting 'The Red Army Crossing the Sivash'.
